BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Officials say heavy rains and flooding from earlier this week are to blame for discolored tap water that people are seeing around Birmingham.
Residents in some areas have been reporting water with a green tint, while others say their water appears brown.
The Birmingham Water Works Board says the water is safe to drink. But discoloration is being caused in some cases by manganese that was flushed out of the ground by rains on Monday.
The system isn’t advising people to boil water. And while spokesman Rick Jackson says the water may have an unpleasant taste, it isn’t dangerous to drink.
Workers are flushing the system to get the water back to normal.
The Birmingham water system serves about 600,000 people in Jefferson, Shelby, Blount, St. Clair and Walker counties.
