CHICAGO (AP) - Chicago’s new bike sharing program survived its first winter in operation. Now that it’s spring, the program is bringing more of the bikes out of hibernation.
Seven hundred bikes that had been put into winter storage are being re-deployed throughout the system of 300 docking stations.
Chicago launched the program known as Divvy last summer with a goal of getting more people to bike to work and fostering quality of life and vibrancy downtown.
To lure more users, the city will offer discounted 24-hour passes during the week of April 21. The passes will be $5 instead of $7. Those signing up for annual memberships that week will get gift cards.
In the first nine months of operation, riders have taken more than 900,000 trips on Divvy bikes.
