COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - A committee will review a policy that now prevents same-sex couples and others without valid Ohio wedding licenses from renting the Ohio Statehouse and its grounds for weddings and receptions.
A spokesman for the Capitol Square Review and Advisory Board that oversees the building and grounds said Thursday that a board committee plans to review the policy.
FreedomOhio, a group supporting same-sex marriage, says the policy discriminates against gay couples who are banned from getting licenses to wed in Ohio.
State Rep. Michael Stinziano (sten-ZEE’-ah-noh) says he wanted the policy reviewed. The Columbus Democrat says he doesn’t think it was specifically intended to discriminate against same-sex couples. But he also says Ohio’s state parks do not have the license requirement and the Statehouse could benefit financially from changing the policy.
