MIAMI (AP) - The Haitian government will soon have a new representative in Miami.

Haiti’s consulate in Miami had been led by Francois Guillaume (fran-SWAH’ gee-OHM’) since 2012. The Haitian government recently named Guillaume as the cabinet member who deals with Haitians living abroad.

In a statement posted last week by Haiti’s government, the new Minister for Haitians Living Overseas said he hoped to develop a plan to improve the working relationship between Haitians abroad and Haitians living in the Caribbean country.

Guillaume’s predecessor resigned last summer amid allegations that she held American citizenship. Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe’s office didn’t say why Bernice Fidelia left office, and the allegations about whether she had become an American citizen were not confirmed. Holding citizenship from another country precludes her from holding higher office in Haiti.
