After two days of meetings with Washington Redskins coaches, executives and players, wide receiver DeSean Jackson remained in limbo on Tuesday as his agent and the team tried to reach an agreement on a contract offer.
Jackson was released by the Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday after six highly productive seasons. The 27-year-old flew to Northern Virginia on Monday night and dined with members of the Redskins’ coaching staff, then was photographed with wide receiver Pierre Garçon, cornerback DeAngelo Hall and rapper Wale at an area nightclub.
Several other teams, including the Buffalo Bills, Oakland Raiders and San Francisco 49ers, are reportedly also interested in Jackson, who failed to mesh with the Eagles’ new coaching staff last season and was jettisoned despite catching 82 passes for 1,332 yards and nine touchdowns, all team and career highs.
The Redskins entered the week with roughly $6.3 million available in salary cap space, according to NFL Players Association records, which could be a problem. Jackson was scheduled to make a base salary of $10.5 million this season, the third of a five-year, $48.5 million contract he signed in 2012.
Adding Jackson would significantly boost the Redskins’ passing game, which ranked 16th in the league last season. Even if Washington is unable to add Jackson, it also signed Andre Roberts, who spent his first four seasons with the Arizona Cardinals, when the free agent signing period opened last month.
