SEATTLE (AP) - The University of Washington is helping lead a geotechnical team to investigate what caused the March 22 landslide at Oso and what might be done to prevent similar disasters.
The university says the Geotechnical Extreme Events Reconnaissance Association is mobilizing a team with one of the leaders a UW associate professor of civil and environment engineering, Joseph Wartman.
The team of six experts plans to collect information about the steep slope above the Stillaguamish River that collapsed and covered a residential area, killing more than two dozen people.
The National Science Foundation is funding the work with the goal of posting findings within a month to help future investigations.
