WEST FRANKFORT, Ill. (AP) - A southern Illinois man is being held without bond after authorities say he shot his wife in the head.

Prosecutors in Franklin County have charged 66-year-old John Adams of West Frankfort with attempted murder.

West Frankfort Police Chief Shawn Talluto says Adams told police by telephone Monday he found 52-year-old wife Kendra Adams unresponsive in their home.

Investigators later determined the woman had been shot in the back of the head with a small-caliber weapon.

Talluto says that Kendra Adams as of late Monday was on life support and in grave condition at a hospital in Evansville, Ind. Her medical status wasn’t clear Tuesday.

Online court records don’t show whether John Adams has an attorney. He does not have a listed home telephone number.
