MILWAUKEE (AP) - A grandmother is charged with a misdemeanor in connection with her 4-year-old grandson accidentally shooting himself.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports (https://bit.ly/1pGqi6p ) Renee Smith was charged Tuesday with leaving a loaded handgun within reach of a child.

Court documents say some children found the gun under a bed March 19. The complaint says one of the children gave it to Keyontist Moffet and the gun fired. A bullet struck his forehead.

The 48-year-old allegedly told police she was in the room with the children but didn’t see anyone holding the handgun before it was fired.

On March 20, police described Moffett as being in grave condition. An update of his condition was not immediately available.

Smith has an initial hearing Thursday.
