ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) - Arlington County has a new tool to count bicyclists, an automated counter called a “bikeometer” that will display the number of cyclists that pass a busy intersection.

The Washington Post (https://wapo.st/1s4kqWK ) reports the device was unveiled Tuesday morning at the intersection of Lee Highway and North Lynn Street. That’s just south of the Key Bridge. A digital display will show the daily, monthly and year-to-date totals of cyclists that pass the point.

Arlington has 30 other counters that track the use of bike and pedestrian trails, but they don’t display their data in real time.

David Patton, a bicycle planner for the county, says the bikeomter cost $32,000 to buy and install. It was paid for with a portion of the local vehicle decal fee.
