An Indian-born woman who penned one of India’s best-selling books, “A Kabuliwala’s Bengali Wife,” about the challenges of marrying an Afghan man and escaping the clutches of the terrorist group in the 1990s, was shot multiple times outside of her husband’s home in Afghanistan.
Shar Wali, who heads the Afghan Police Criminal Investigation Department in Paktika, said in NBC on Friday that Sushmita Banerjee died at the scene and that the Taliban was responsible for her killing. Mr. Wali said the militants stormed her house, tied up her husband and family members, then took her outside and shot her several times.
Another local police official said Taliban members fired more than 20 rounds into her body, mostly at her head, NBC reported. They then dumped her body at a madrassa located down the road.
Ms. Banerjee was 49 at the time of her death. She had a colorful past of speaking out against the Taliban regime, and her best-selling book was later turned into a Bollywood movie, “Escape From The Taliban.”
Members of the Taliban denied responsibility for her killing, NBC reported.
