George Zimmerman’s wife Shellie is filing for divorce less than two months after he was acquitted in the fatal shooting of Trayvon Martin, ABC News reported.

Mrs. Zimmerman, a 26-year-old aspiring nurse, pleaded guilty last month to a misdemeanor perjury charge after she lied about the couple’s assets following her husband’s arrest.

She appeared without her husband in court, telling freelance journalist Christi O’Connor that she felt “very much alone” that day.

ABC News reported that Mrs. Zimmerman filed paperwork to leave her husband just days after her interview with the Florida journalist.

Miss O’Connor told ABC News that Shellie said her husband has “beaten down her self-esteem,” but she is “looking forward to getting her life back.”

“She has a moment in the spotlight. She wants everyone to know that she changed her life,” Miss O’Connor said, adding that the trial put a major strain on the couple’s relationship.

“It put great stress on their marriage,” she said. “Constantly having to move. She got threats. A lot of threats. She doesn’t want to reveal from who…. They are constantly living under fear of being attacked.”

Mrs. Zimmerman is serving one year probation and must complete 100 hours of community service.
