Sen. John McCain was busted by a newspaper photographer playing poker on his iPhone during a Senate hearing on Tuesday with Secretary of State John F. Kerry on Syria and the potential for America to launch military strikes against President Bashar Assad’s regime.

When confronted, he tried to joke his way out of his discomfort. He tweeted — after The Washington Post published the photo of his Senate Foreign Relations Committee activities: “Scandal! Caught playing iPhone game at 3+ hour Senate hearing – worst of all I lost!”

The issue didn’t die away, however: Mr. McCain was forced to account for his actions on a later CNN appearance.

He said, as The Blaze reported: “Well, as much as I like to always listen in rapt attention constantly with remarks of my colleagues over a three-and-a-half hour period, occasionally I get a little bored, and so I resorted — but the worst thing about it is, I lost thousands of dollars in this game.”

He also clarified on CNN that he was playing with fake money.
