Emergency workers on Monday were still trying to gain access to the wreckage of a private jet crash at Santa Monica Airport in California that sparked a massive ground fire.

The jet crashed late Sunday, sending a ball of fire into the sky and creating what fire officials described as an “unsurvivable” scenario, NBC reported.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor said it’s not known how many passengers were aboard, or how they fared in the crash. But Santa Monica Fire Department Capt. John Nevandro said to NBC that the plane wrecked into a building and that “the building actually collapsed and wrapped itself around the plane.”

A crane was needed to lift up the collapsed hanger and clear the debris, he said.

The twin-engine Cessna Citation ran off the runway during landing. The plane was valued at about $3 million.

The plane’s tail peeked out from the debris, showing its registration number. NBC reported the number shows the plane is registered to a debt management and real estate company that’s headquartered in Malibu, Calif.
