Hard-line protesters in Iran hurled eggs and shoes at the motorcade of Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Saturday as he returned from a landmark visit to the United Nations, which concluded with a phone call with President Obama, The Telegraph reported.
Several dozen protesters gathered outside Tehran’s Mehrabad Airport and chanted, “Death to America,” as they banged on the side of Mr. Rouhani’s vehicle.
At least one shoe was thrown at Mr. Rouhani as he stood up through his limousine’s sunroof, the semiofficial Mehr news agency reported.
“Dialogue with Satan is not ’hope and prudence,’” some demonstrators chanted, referring to a Rouhani campaign slogan from June, The Telegraph said.
Supporters of the new president were present in greater numbers, the report said.
One banner read, “Yes to peace, no to war.”
Mr. Rouhani and President Obama spent 15 minutes on the phone Friday afternoon. It was the first direct contact between the two countries’ leaders since the 1979 Islamic revolution against the shah, which led to a hostage crisis at the U.S. Embassy in Tehran, The Telegraph reported.
