Investigators on Friday are still seeking clues about a MAC 11 subcompact machine pistol found stashed inside a closet at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York.

The Associated Press reported that a contractor who was running a cable through a ceiling saw the weapon. It was hidden in a storage closet, behind a locked manager’s office door, investigators said.

Port Authority of New York and New Jersey spokesman Joe Pentangelo said only a few people have access to that office. It’s in Terminal 1, just outside the secured area.

At the same time, AP reported that members of the public may have been able to walk by the office — opening the door to a larger suspect base.

Mr. Pentangelo said the MAC 11 wasn’t loaded, and investigators didn’t find any ammunition.
