Ku Klux Klan members have been given the thumbs-up to a planned rally at Gettysburg National Military Park, with a special use permit approval for next Saturday.

The Oct. 5 rally was granted a Maryland-based KKK unit, The Associated Press reported. It’s set for the lawn area that’s located just north of Gen. George Meade’s Headquarters, park officials said.

The park is public property and government officials would have run into First Amendment issues had they tried to deny the permit request, AP said.

The same Maryland KKK group held a rally a few weeks ago at the Antietam National Battlefield outside Sharpsburg. That’s where thousands died in a massive Civil War battle, leading to the creation of the Emancipation Proclamation.
