Just moments after the Senate voted for a continuing resolution that continues to fund Obamacare, Sens. Ted Cruz and Mike Lee called on House Republicans to pass another continuing resolution that undoes the Senate’s work and defunds the health care law.
“I want the House to continue to stand with the American people against Obamacare,” said Mr. Lee, Utah Republican.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Nevada Democrat, has already said that the Democratically-controlled Senate will only pass a “clean” continuing resolution that does not include any controversial amendments, like the one to defund Obamacare. The president has also said that he would veto such a bill if it made it to his desk.
When asked if they would accept a House bill that delayed rather than defunded Obamacare or that repealed the medical device tax, Mr. Cruz, Texas Republican, told reporters it is too early to speculate on what the House bill might say.
“Today, Senate Democrats didn’t listen to those millions of Americans, but this is a process that will go back and forth between the House of Representatives and the Senate,” Mr. Cruz said. “The House was always in the position where it was going to lead, and I know from my perspective and Sen. Lee’s perspective, we look forward to helping and supporting the House standing up and doing the right thing and fighting for the American people.”
If an agreement is not reached, the government will shutdown at midnight on Monday.
