Former President George H.W. Bush served as a witness for a same-sex marriage ceremony that saw the union of two of his longtime friends, one of his spokesman said on Wednesday.

Mr. Bush and his wife, Barbara, attended the Saturday ceremony of their friends — Bonnie Clement and Helen Thorgaisen — as friends and private citizens, not to make a political statement, spokesman Jim McGrath said, The Associated Press reported.

It didn’t take long for a photo of Mr. Bush at the ceremony to make the social media circuit. Ms. Thorgaisen posted the picture of Mr. Bush as he signed the wedding license with the caption: “Getting our marriage license witnessed!”

The lesbian couple own a general store in Kennebunk, Maine, nearby the Bush family complex, AP reported.

Gay marriage was legalized in the state in December.
