President Obama didn’t watch Sen. Ted Cruz’s filibuster attempt to kill the president’s health-care program, the White House said Wednesday.
“I don’t believe so,” White House press secretary Jay Carney said when asked if Mr. Obama watched the 21-plus-hour protest in the Senate.
The president was in New York when Mr. Cruz began his marathon Tuesday afternoon. Mr. Obama flew back to Washington late Tuesday night on Air Force One.
Asked if he himself watched the filibuster, Mr. Carney replied, “I did not. I certainly read about it.”
Asked for an assessment of Mr. Cruz’s filibuster, which ended at noon, Mr. Carney said the president and his aides “oppose any efforts to engage in a political battle of the past to try to achieve some sort of ideological victory” that would shut down the government and deprive people of affordable health insurance.
“A family of four in Texas will have available to it the option of purchasing affordable health insurance for $57 per month,” Mr. Carney said. “That is a good thing.”
