President Obama endorsed Bill de Blasio for New York City mayor on Monday, calling the fellow Democrat’s progressive-minded principles a win for his constituents.
“Bill’s agenda for New York is marked by bold, courageous ideas that address the great challenges of our time,” Mr. Obama said, The Associated Press reported.
Mr. Obama specified that it was Mr. de Blasio’s vision of “progressive change” that most impressed, and suggested de Blasio’s policies would go far toward improving the city’s offerings for affordable housing, health care and pre-kindergarten education.
Former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton just endorsed Mr. de Blasio, too.
AP reported that Mr. de Blasio called Mr. Obama’s endorsement a “tremendous honor” and hoped that the president might also make his presence known on the upcoming campaign trail.
Mr. de Blasio faces off against Republican candidate Joe Lhota on Nov. 5.
