A gunman whose presence sent the North Carolina Central University in Durham into lockdown mode was located, shot and killed on Tuesday, police said.
Durham police said they tracked the suspect, who was believed to be armed and dangerous, onto the college campus late Monday evening, leading to the school’s lockdown about 10:15 p.m., CBS reported. They found him in nearby woods about 1 a.m. on Tuesday.
University police chief Tim Bellamy told CBS that the suspect raised his gun to officers, so police fired. The suspect was killed at the scene.
His name and age have not been released, but police did say he’s not a student.
Details about the man’s apprehension — and why he was initially being tracked by police — are still unclear.
