Rep. Steve Cohen took to Twitter Monday evening, posting a cartoon that essentially blames the National Rifle Association for the Washington Navy Yard shooting, the Blaze first reported.
“Horror, sadness&insanity of tragic #NavyYardShooting, depicted by one of our nation’s greatest #cartoonists, Bill Day,” the Tennessee Democrat tweeted with a cartoon attached, depicting an AR-15 with the letters “NRA” stamped on the cheek rest.
A symbol for the Washington Navy Yard is visible in the scope in Mr. Day’s cartoon, and the U.S. Capitol sits behind that on the rail. The Washington Monument sits atop the barrel of the AR-15.
Mr. Cohen tweeted the cartoon to his 8,346 followers, but not everyone was impressed.
“As a progressive who believes very strongly in gun control I still have to ask … what the hell were you thinking posting this?” one commenter wrote.
“You represent the people? Do the people know exactly how sick you are?” radio host Simon Conway tweeted.

Washington police said Tuesday that officers armed with AR-15s exchanged fire with gunman Aaron Alexis, 34, that lasted more than 30 minutes. Alexis was killed in the gunfire.
Authorities originally believed Alexis had been armed with an AR-15, but now say he entered the navy yard with only a shotgun and may have obtained a pistol once inside, the New York Times reported.
Thirteen people have died due to Monday’s attack, including the shooter.
