In the wake of a shooting at the Navy Yard on Monday that left 12 employees dead, Police Chief Cedric Alexander, from the DeKalb, Ga., County police department, said it’s important to shift the conversation back to the role mental health plays in many of these mass shootings.
Shooting suspect Aaron Alexis had “a pattern of anger, a pattern of being alone, a pattern of violence that has occurred across the country over the past number of years and, of course, yesterday it seems that all of it has come to a culmination,” Chief Alexander said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”
Alexis was arrested for disorderly conduct in 2008 in DeKalb County, but Chief Alexander said the department didn’t have much information on him.
“There has been some mental issue that always seems to come about with these individuals in the past couple years,” Chief Alexander said. “We have to begin having conversations again about mental health as it relates to gun violence in this country.”
