President Obama was briefed several times Monday morning by his top counterterrorism aide about the shooting at the Washington Navy Yard, a White House official said.
The president directed his team to stay in touch with various federal officials, including in the Navy and the FBI, as well as local officials.
He is receiving updates about the shooting from his assistant for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism, Lisa Monaco, and Deputy Chief of Staff Alyssa Mastromanaco.
“We urge citizens to listen to the authorities and follow directions from the first responders on site,” the White House said in a statement.
