A roadside bomb planted by the Taliban killed a top Pakistani general and two officers on Sunday, army officials said.
Maj. Gen. Sanaullah Khan, the commanding officer in the Swat Valley, was killed in the Upper Dir district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in northern Pakistan near the border with Afghanistan, CNN reported.
Just the day before, officials in the province announced a “phased withdrawal” of troops from Upper Dir, Lower Dir and Swat, CNN reported. A Taliban spokesman said Sunday, however, that there is no cease-fire with the Pakistani government and that attacks will continue, the report said.
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif condemned the attack.
“[The] Pakistan Army has made substantial sacrifices to protect the nation against the menace of terrorism, and such cowardly acts by terrorists cannot deter the morale of our armed forces,” he said in a statement Sunday.
