Explosive experts safely detonated a bomb that was discovered early Friday outside the building that houses Cambodia’s parliament.
The detonation caused a loud noise that reverberated and shook nearby buildings, military spokesman Kheng Tito said to Agence France-Presse.
Police also discovered three M79 rockets, tied in a bundle, near Democracy Park. That’s the site of massive protests in July over the then-upcoming prime minister election.
Prime Minister Hun Sen was ultimately elected, but his win was hotly disputed. The bomb scare marks ongoing tensions among government officials and those who don’t like the prime minister’s strongman rule, AFP reported.
“These devices were planted in order to cause insecurity, chaos and to intimidate people,” said one government spokesman.
