The medical examiner who gave weak courtroom testimony about his autopsy of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin has been fired, and his attorney says a discrimination lawsuit is pending.
Volusia County Medical Examiner’s Office officials said on Wednesday that Shiping Bao was told to leave his associated medical examiner position last week. The cause for the termination wasn’t specified, CNN reported.
Mr. Bao’s attorney, Willie E. Gary, filed a complaint against the county and said he was going to pursue a lawsuit for discrimination, harassment and wrongful termination.
The complaint states, in part: “This is a formal request to ask you to preserve any and all documents … and/or evidence related to Dr. Bao’s claims and/or the Trayvon Martin case.”
Mr. Bao conducted Trayvon’s autopsy and testified on his findings. But his testimony was muddled and he changed his mind on the witness stand about several key findings, including the length of time that Trayvon was alive after the shooting and whether the marijuana in his system played any role in his judgment.
