Prince William has wrapped up seven years of service in the military and is on the cusp of leaving, Kensington Palace announced this week.
He completed his last Royal Air Force search-and-rescue piloting mission on Tuesday, the BBC said. He’s now exiting military service and taking on a royal role that includes official Duke of Cambridge duties and more charity work with his duchess, who recently gave birth to a son.
Prince William is second in line to the throne, after his father, Prince Charles.
Prince William’s next year is more transitional, however, and he won’t immediately assume the “full time royal” role, BBC said, in a tweet.
Initially, in fact, he’ll be an environmentalist, promoting protections for endangered species.
A palace spokesman said, in BBC: “He will expand his work in the field of conservation, particularly in respect of endangered species. The duke will continue to work with his charities on issues relating to children and young people, veterans and serving members of the armed forces.”
