George Zimmerman’s attorney, Mark O’Mara, said on Tuesday evening on CNN that he was stepping down as legal counsel for his now-famous client.
“I am not representing George Zimmerman in his recent domestic altercation case or his impending divorce case,” Mr. O’Mara said.
Mr. O’Mara is still the listed attorney for Mr. Zimmerman’s lawsuit against NBC over that network’s repeated instances of creative editing during his murder trial of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin. And he’ll also serve as Mr. Zimmerman’s attorney for the sanction motions that are still outstanding from the trial, and on the court filings to recover costs from the trial from the state of Florida.
Mr. O’Mara didn’t go into details about his pared-back role in Mr. Zimmerman’s life. But CNN recently offered him a position as a legal analyst for the cable news station, and Mr. O’Mara reportedly accepted.
The announcement comes on the heels of Mr. Zimmerman’s brief detention over a fight with his wife, Shellie, and her father, David Bryant Dean, that allegedly involved a gun. Mr. Zimmerman wasn’t charged; the two declined to press charges, United Press International reported.
But that wasn’t his first run-in with police, since the trial ended. Mr. Zimmerman’s also been pulled over twice for speeding in the past two months. His wife, meanwhile, says the two are headed for divorce.
