Princeton University took the top place honors in U.S. News & World Report’s latest ranking of top institutes of higher learning around the nation.

Runners-up: Harvard University, followed by Yale University, CBS News reported.

The magazine’s annual list was released on Tuesday, with rankings on about 1,800 schools. Among the rankings was a No. 20 slot for University of California-Berkeley, as a top public school, and a couple of ties. Stanford University and the University of Chicago both came in fifth place; Duke University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of Pennsylvania all tied for No. 7.

The fourth place spot, meanwhile, went to Columbia University.

Tying for 10th: California Institute of Technology and Dartmouth College.

Meanwhile, on the public school list, the University of Californian-Los Angeles came in second, behind Berkeley, while Virginia University hit the third-place spot.

The annual list considers colleges on a variety of categories, including retention and graduation rates. This year’s top three private schools — Princeton, Harvard and Yale — earned the rankings because of perceived best “bang for the bucks” offerings, CBS reported.
