Iran’s new president, Hasan Rouhani, said on Tuesday that this month’s meeting of the General Assembly in New York may prove the perfect setting to reignite talks about the nation’s nuclear program.
The state-run Iranian news agency reported Mr. Rouhani said he would use that U.N. occasion to try and get talks with the international community up and running again.
The last time Iran agreed to discuss its nuclear development with world powers was in April, and those talks ended in a stalemate, The Associated Press reported.
Iran has repeatedly insisted its nuclear development program was for peaceful purposes only, to provide citizens with an energy source. The West and other global powers, however, say satellite images show Iran’s enrichment program is aimed at developing a nuclear weapons — in violation of U.N. dictates.
Mr. Rouhani is due to attend this month’s United Nations gathering with his foreign minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif.
