Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz is so annoyed by the government shutdown that from Wednesday to Friday, the chain is offering a free coffee to any customer in the U.S. who buys another person a beverage.

“In times like these, small acts of civility like these make a big difference,” the company website reads. “We’re hoping this small motivation will encourage you to be the spark of connection that helps bring us all a little closer at a time when showing our unity is so important… #payitforward—and lets see what can happen.”

The offer is a way to help fellow citizens “support and connect with one another, even as we wait for our elected officials to do the same for our country,” Mr. Schultz said in a memo to staff on Tuesday, the Associated Press reported.

It’s not the first time Mr. Schultz has waded into the national political debate. Soon after the Washington Navy Yard shooting, he requested patrons not bring guns into Starbucks stores.
