Following another suicide just two weeks ago by a foreign tourist, Airports of Thailand is to begin installing glass shields on the fourth floor of Suvarnabhumi’s terminal building in Bangkok to prevent people from taking their own lives and damaging the country’s reputation.
Suvarnabhumi director Raweewan Netarakavesana said on Tuesday that many people commit suicide by jumping over the handrails on the fourth floor of the terminal building each year, including three in just the past five months, the Bangkok Post reported.
The frequent suicides risk damaging the country’s image, so the company will spend about 30 million baht [$953,379] on building the glass walls, Netarakavesana said.
Suvarnabhumi is Thailand’s gateway airport, served by 107 international airlines and connecting Bangkok with more than 150 cities worldwide, the Bangkok Post reported. The airport is currently under an expansion project that hopes to raise passenger capacity from 45 million to 60 million by 2016, the report said.
