Appearing to promote his new film “Captain Phillips,” Tom Hanks revealed to David Letterman Monday night that’s he’s suffering from Type 2 diabetes.

“I went to the doctor and he said, ’You know those high blood sugar numbers you’ve been dealing with since you were 36?,’” the 57-year-old said on “Late Show With David Letterman.” “’Well, you graduated! You’ve got Type 2 diabetes, young man.’”

Hanks’ yo-yoing weight for various movie roles could have played a part in his condition, an expert told the New York Post.

“My doctor said, ’If you can weigh as much as you weighed in high school… you will essentially be completely healthy… you will not have Type 2 diabetes.’ And then I said to her, ’Well, I’m gonna have Type 2 diabetes. Because there is no way I can weigh as much as I did in high school,’” the actor joked, adding that he weighed 96-pounds in high school.

Mr. Hanks said his condition is under control as long as he watches his weight, the New York Post reported.
