Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is poised to become the newest member of the College Football Player’s selection committee — but to former Auburn coach Pat Dye, that would be a travesty.
She’s not played the game, put her “hand in the dirt,” Dye said, as Breitbart reported.
He went on: “All she knows about football is what somebody told her. Or what she read in a book. Or what she saw on television. To understand football, you’ve got to play with your hand in the dirt.
Dye said he’s not trying to offend, but it’s just common sense.
“I love Condoleeza Rice and she’s probably a good statesman and all of that but how in the hell does she know what it’s like out there when you can’t get your breath and it’s 110 degrees and the coach asks you to go some more?” he said, as Breitbart reported.
Rice, for her part, said she would love to become the NFL commissioner — it would be a dream come true. Moreover, she’s no dummy when it comes to the game.
Coaches Jim Harbaugh, Tyrone Willingham and David Shaw all have touted her recruitment abilities and praised her knowledge of football. And when Rice left the White House under President George W. Bush, talk was that she might become a top-level manager for the San Francisco 49ers.
