Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu drew Twitter mockery Saturday after he gave a BCC interview revealing that he believes jeans are banned in Iran.
“I think if the Iranian people had freedom, they would wear jeans, listen to Western music, and have free elections,” Mr. Netanyahu said.
Iranians wasted no time in taking to the internet to tweet photos of themselves wearing jeans.
“Look! A metro!” one person wrote with a photo of several people wearing jeans on a commuter train. “Oh, AND they’re wearing #jeans! In #Iran! Also, some appear to be reading books!”
“Mr. Netanyahu, here is a shop selling weapons of mass destruction in Iran,” another tweet read, showing a picture of a jeans store.
Slate.com points out that though certain tight-fitting jeans are outlawed in places like public universities, they are not uncommon for both men and women, particularly in urban areas.
