A secret letter signed by all the female Democratic senators shows that Hillary Rodham Clinton is their choice for president in 2016.
ABC News reported that the letter was signed earlier this year but was kept quiet. Among the signers: Sen. Elizabeth Warren, as well as 16 other high-ranking and high-profile Democrats, some of whom have been mentioned as possible White House contenders.
The letter was written at the urging of Sen. Barbara Boxer to give Ms. Clinton an extra boost of support for the presidency, ABC said. Sen. Kay R. Hagan mistakenly revealed the existence of the letter this week at a New York City public event and later apologized for her slip.
Mrs. Hagan’s statement: “All of the Senate Democratic women have written a letter encouraging her to run.”
Mrs. Clinton’s office didn’t comment on the statement or the letter, ABC reported. But Mrs. Boxer said: “I have repeatedly said — publicly, privately and in writing — that Hillary Clinton should run for president in 2016. I can only speak for myself. I’ll leave it to my colleagues to describe their views.”
The letter still hasn’t emerged, ABC said. But talk of its existence does bolster views that Mrs. Clinton’s run for the White House is inevitable. And it also seems to suggest that other Democrats, such as Mrs. Warren or Sen. Kirsten E. Gillibrand, would gladly step to the side and drop their own White House plans if Mrs. Clinton sought the high office.
