A massive dust storm that swept suddenly across Interstate 10 in Arizona sent 19 vehicles onto a collision course, ultimately leaving three dead and a dozen injured.

Ten commercial vehicles, a tanker, a recreational vehicle and seven smaller passenger vehicles were all involved in the Tuesday crash, authorities with the Arizona Department of Public Safety said, The Arizona Republic reported. The dust storm struck along the roadway between Phoenix and Casa Grande, law enforcement reported.

Some vehicles even wedged under the trucks and semi-tractor trailers, the newspaper reported.

A 77-year-old Washington man was killed; the names and ages of the other two victims aren’t yet known. Hospital authorities report that the injuries range from minor to serious.

The wreck backed up traffic for about 15 miles, and investigators are still trying to piece together the line of events.
