Egypt’s interim government approved a draft version of a law that would send to jail anyone who disrespected the flag or refused to stand during the playing of the national anthem.
The new law also would fine violators, The Blaze reported.
The measure specifically states that “ridiculing the Egyptian flag and not standing in respect when the national anthem is played in public is a crime punishable by a maximum of six months imprisonment and/or … a fine [of about $726].
The law comes just days after Egypt’s Ministry of Education elected to ban all songs at schools except for the national anthem.
