Hollywood has set its sights on Mitch McConnell, sending out A-list actors and actresses to defeat the Republican Kentucky senator with big-money donations to his Democratic Party opponent in the 2014 race.
Among the donors recorded by FEC documents are 66 Hollywood bigwigs – producers, agents, celebrities and lawyers, The Hill reported.
They gave an accumulated $250,000 to Democratic senate contender Alison Lundergan Grimes, just in the few months between July and September. Leonardo DiCaprio, Cameron Diaz, Jerry Seinfeld, Ben Stiller and Ben Affleck are all on the list, The Hill reported.
Those giving the maximum $5,200 to Ms. Grimes, the current secretary of state in Kentucky, The Hill reported: Danny DeVito, Jack Black, Jon Hamm and Nicolas Cage, as well as Mr. DiCaprio.
Ms. Diaz and Mr. Stiller each gave $2,500. Leonard Nimoy – best known, perhaps, as Spock on the Star Trek series – kicked in $500, as did Hollywood icon Woody Allen.
The Hill reported that the celebrity financial pockets opened at the request of Jeffrey Katzenberg, a notable Democratic donor and Hollywood player who wants to see Mr. McConnell kicked from office.
