Former Washington Redskins star Dexter Manley is in hot water after calling Dallas Cowboys great Troy Aikman a “queer” on WTOP radio Monday morning.
The comment cost Manley his welcome on WTOP, a radio station he frequently appears on as a guest.
The segment was full of jokes and laughs, with Manley talking about how the Redskins’ 45-21 loss to the Denver Broncos on Sunday made him kick his dogs, The Washington Post reported. But just as the segment was wrapping up, he took it one step too far.
“Was it a big jinx that Troy Aikman was doing the game, the former Cowboy?” one of the show’s hosts asked.
“I think Troy was a queer,” Manley responded.
The host asked if he wanted to apologize to Aikman for the comment.
“No, I’ll just say I’ll take that back,” Manley said.
After some prodding by the host, Manley finally apologized.
“OK, I apologize,” he laughed.
Jim Farley, the station’s newsroom director, went into damage control on Twitter soon after, posting a series of tweets repeating that Manley will not be allowed back on air.
“We are shocked and stunned. Needless to say, Dexter Manley will not be on WTOP again,” he tweeted.
Manley was a All-Pro defensive end who was inducted into the Redskins Ring of Fame in 2000. He was permanently banned from the NFL in 1991 after several failed drug tests.
