Dubai announced the partial opening of a new airport Sunday — Al Maktoum International Airport, billed to become the world’s largest when the project is finally finished.
The port celebrated its first commercial flight just hours ago, CNN reported.
The airport is in Jebel Ali, stretching into part of Dubai World Central, in what the government has termed “Aviation City,” CNN reported. Commercial passenger service, now partially opened, will be fully operational by 2027. That’s a delay of 10 years, in part because of financial struggles in the region.
The full cost of the project is estimated at almost $33 billion.
