President Obama on Wednesday spoke on the phone with German Chancellor Angela Merkel to assure her the U.S. is not listening to her phone calls, the White House said.
That assurance came amid allegations from a German official that American intelligence agencies had been monitoring the chancellor’s cell phone.
“The United States is not monitoring and will not monitor communications of the chancellor,” White House Press Secretary Jay Carney told reporters Wednesday.
But when pressed on the question, Mr. Carney would not explicitly say whether U.S. intelligence agencies may have inadvertently picked up some of Ms. Merkel’s phone conversations while monitoring others.
