Police still are searching for two armed robbers who stole $60,000 from a Whole Foods Market in Manhattan on Sunday, New York City police said.
Employees at the Bowery Whole Foods on East Houston Street were robbed while transporting the store’s cash in an elevator around 10 p.m. When the elevator doors opened, a gun-wielding robber ordered them onto the ground, and the other tied one of the employee’s hands behind his back, The Huffington Post reported.
The two men took the cash and fled through a service door down Chrystie Street, the report said.
“I can confirm that Sunday night, Whole Foods Market’s Bowery store at 95 East Houston St. in New York City was robbed at gunpoint,” Whole Foods spokesman Michael Sinatra told The Observer.
Still, rumors are abounding as to whether the robbery might have been an inside job.
A source told the New York Post that the heist may have been an inside job.
“They ran from the receiving door which no one outside the store knows about,” a worker said. “They know parts of the store that we only know.”
