A former Marine who turned to teaching math as his new vocation is being hailed as a hero on Tuesday after taking a bullet and giving his life to save his students during a shooting that set the nation on edge at Sparks Middle School in Nevada.
Michael Landsberry, 45, a former Marine who still served as a member of the Nevada Air National Guard, was killed by a 12-year-old boy who opened fire on students and staff at the school before turning the gun on himself, NBC reported. The teacher died while trying to protect his class, law enforcement said.
Ultimately, two students were injured during the incident early Monday morning, NBC said. On Tuesday, their conditions were listed as stable.
It’s not known why the boy, pronounced dead at the scene, committed the shootings, but the teacher is a “hero,” said Tim Robinson, deputy chief of the Reno police, in the report.
Kyle Nucum, 13, said to NBC that he was in class when the suspect pointed “a gun at the teacher after the teacher told him to put it down,” and then pulled the trigger.
The name of the shooter still hasn’t been released.
