Let the weddings begin. As the clock chimed midnight, gay couples in New Jersey who had lined the streets of cities and towns across the state, waiting for the last stroke that would usher in Monday and the implementation of a new same-sex wedding law, finally traded vows.
Newark Mayor Cory Booker, who’s also poised for a Senate seat in Congress, couldn’t help but choke up, The Associated Press reported. As he headed up a ceremony for seven gay couples, he told those who witnessed: “This is very beautiful.”
New Jersey is the 14th state to recognize gay marriages.
The state’s highest court on Friday opened the door for Monday’s ceremonies after justices ruled against Gov. Chris Christie’s request for a delay. A lower court had already legalized gay marriage in New Jersey, but Mr. Christie wanted to halt its implementation in the face of rising political controversy.
