OPINION:
Reading “Raising debt limit is a sign of failure” (Comment & Analysis, Oct. 17) brought a question to mind: Who is Barack Obama? In 2006, then-Sen. Obama opposed an increase to America’s debt limit, saying doing so would be fiscally irresponsible. He even explained in some detail his reasons for this position. Now it appears that America’s debt incurred by President Obama’s administration will soon exceed the combined debt incurred by all the previous presidents. He, by all accounts that I see and hear, has absolutely no interest in reducing our nation’s debt.
Are not people guided by what we call guiding principles, and do we not judge the character of people by how well they honor those guiding principles in their lives? Do we not understand our heroes and heroines (and hopefully, our leaders) to be those with character who honor their principles even in the face of hardship and opposition? People of weak character, those whose principles are blown by the wind, are not usually admired.
What are the president’s guiding principles regarding the monumental fiscal problems facing our nation?
