OPINION:
Sen. John McCain’s words on the Senate floor last week were disingenuous and blatantly pro-Obama (“John McCain rips Ted Cruz’s Obamacare Nazi comparison,” Web, Sept. 25). Whenever a moral principle is at stake, “the Maverick” consistently votes liberal Democrat, dissembles and twists the issue to take other self-centered, career-minded Republicans with him.
As for Sen. Ted Cruz’s comments about World War II, Mr. McCain failed to point out that Europe had to be attacked before they fought. The United States had to be attacked before acting. It was clear as early as 1933 where Hitler was headed and that war would be inevitable, but Europe waited until 1939, and the United States waited until 1941 to act. Perhaps a way could have been found early on to neutralize the trajectory Hitler was leading Germany along had Europeans and the United States been willing to call a spade a spade before 1939.
Owing to Mr. McCain and the other careerist go-along-to-get-along Republicans, America will now have to suffer the attack of Obamacare instead of clipping it before the rockslide worsens. These are dark days for all Americans.
Everybody dismisses the idea of a third party, but let me remind everyone that the Republican Party was once a third party. We now are at a crossroads between authoritarianism and freedom. Obamacare is the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854. Republicans then paid with their blood to prevent Kansas from becoming a slave state, despite Democrats’ pro-slavery violence and ballot-stuffing. Those nascent Republicans did not shirk their principles then; conservatives must not shirk the principles of freedom now.
