OPINION:
Recently, we received notice from our health insurance carrier, Anthem, regarding its upcoming cancellation of our individual medical policy in order to comply with the Affordable Care Act. Lest we worry, Anthem informed us that it intends to move us to a “new, suggested Anthem plan” with benefits that most closely match our current policy — at a 28 percent increase in monthly premiums (for now).
Further, Anthem advised us, “to keep costs down,” Anthem will have a “new network” of providers, and our current providers may not be in the new network. Translation: we may have to change doctors. And, as required by Obamacare, we are required to have a “pediatric dental benefit.” Why? My husband and I are beyond childbearing age, with five children over the age of 26. Alternatively, we can go out and search for something better — if we can find it.
My husband is self-employed; thus we do not receive health insurance through an employer. Now, because of the Affordable Care Act, we’re being deprived of choices and are required to pay higher premiums (28 percent) to maintain similar coverage.
So why is this so disillusioning? In 2009, President Obama said, “[N]o matter how we reform health care, we will keep this promise to the American people: If you like your doctor, you will be able to keep your doctor, period. … If you like your health care plan, you’ll be able to keep your health care plan, period. … No one will take it away, no matter what.” Was this a lie or gross ignorance? Neither is excusable.
My husband and I are Democrats, and we are ashamed of what Mr. Obama has done under the guise of helping the middle class. The Affordable Care Act does not make our lives easier. We can’t wait for the 2014 elections to show our disgust.
