A military family in Texas is alternately hurt and outraged at the work of a vandal who tore up and snapped poles holding a dozen American flags flying in their front yard.
“This is what I came home to,” said Sonja Norman, to local KHOU Channel 11 News, pointing to a piles of small flags on the ground among their broken poles. “They were stuck in the ground and you can tell they were broken in half.”
The 30 flags were placed at the entrance to their subdivision property at the request of officials with the Veterans of Foreign Wars, who wanted to honor the family’s returning military member — Private First Class Noah Norman, on leave from the Marine Corps
Ms. Norman said she noticed the flag damage when she came home from work.
“I was very upset, very hurt,” she said. “I think I wanted to cry more than anything when I saw that.”
Others in the family don’t understand the act of vandalism, either.

“I think it’s really disgraceful and really wrong, especially because if it hadn’t been for my brother-in-law, they wouldn’t have the right — even the freedom — break the sticks in half,” said Melissa Norman to the local broadcaster.
